A sheep-strewn landscape characterised by ancient dry-stone walls, rivers and waterfalls - and famous for its cheese and ales - the wild moorland of the Yorkshire Dales has inspired many novels, including those of the prolific Bronte family. Most of the area is covered by the Yorkshire Dales National Park, while the softer landscapes of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty around the fine market towns of Ripon, Leyburn and Richmond adjoin it to the east.
