The Tack Room, Ruston, North York Moors
Kate Risker and her family have lovingly restored a former tack-room at their smallholding and turned it into a perfect getaway for horse-lovers. It’s themed on the land and agriculture, with lots of beautiful and thoughtful touches and an emphasis on recycling. At night, you can enjoy the bonus of truly dark skies speckled with stars – so unusual nowadays!
Staying here is on a self-catering basis but the ingredients for an excellent breakfast are provided, and for evening meals the Downe Arms is 10 minutes away via a pretty walk. The cottage is designed for two, with a king-size bed - and the option of an additional mattress.
Located on the southern edge of the National Park, there are wonderful riding trails into Wykeham, Broxa and Dalby Forests and around Harwood Dale. Boxing up for a short distance, you can reach Filey Beach where at low tide you can canter along the sands (though it's best to avoid the summer holidays because it gets so crowded).
There are flexible options for stabling and grazing. You can even choose whether to muck out and poo-pick yourself or have a real holiday and pay someone else do this for you! There is occasionally the option for a local rider to join you and show you some of the routes – please ask on booking.
